The Honmaru Palace at Nijo Castle, a two-storey timber palace among pines, seen from the keep tower base with Kyoto's hills behind

Nijo Castle adult fare

A timed Honmaru Palace ticket and castle admission with the Ninomaru Palace, booked together for one adult on the date you choose.

The adult fare is for anyone past high school, university students included. It books two of the castle's own tickets for one visitor: the Honmaru Palace ticket for your date and 20-minute entry time, and castle admission, which also covers the Ninomaru Palace and its garden.

What the adult fare covers

The Honmaru Palace: the entrance hall, audience rooms and living quarters of the Katsura-no-miya palace, moved into the inner ward in the 1890s and reopened in 2024. About 40 minutes inside after an introductory film.

Castle admission through the East Gate, the Ninomaru Palace with its Kano-school wall paintings and nightingale floors, the Ninomaru Garden, the Honmaru Garden and the keep tower base.

On the day

Show the castle admission e-ticket at the East Gate at least 20 minutes before your Honmaru time, then walk about 850 metres to the inner ward. Show the Honmaru e-ticket at the palace door, take off your shoes and leave your bag in a locker. Wear socks.

No photos inside either palace. Allow two and a half to three hours for the whole castle.

Who it is not for

Junior high, high school and elementary school students have their own fares. On Tuesdays in January, July, August and December the Ninomaru Palace is closed, so the adult fare is not offered on those dates. Anyone who can't manage a long walk on gravel and a palace visit in socks should plan around both.

Frequently asked
